Italian Women's Fencing Triumph at London 2012
Italy Claims All Three Medals in Women's Foil
Di Francisca Defeats Errigo in Epic Final
Italy has made history at the London 2012 Olympics by claiming all three medals in the women's foil competition. Elisa Di Francisca emerged victorious in the individual foil event, defeating compatriot Arianna Errigo in a thrilling extra-time match. The pair were locked at 11-11 before Di Francisca scored the winning touch.
This is the first time that Italy has ever won all three medals in a single fencing event at the Olympics. It is also the first time that Italy has won a gold medal in women's foil since the event was introduced at the 1924 Games.
In the semifinals, Di Francisca defeated world champion Valentina Vezzali, while Errigo defeated Lee Kiefer of the United States. Vezzali went on to win the bronze medal by defeating Kiefer in the bronze medal match.
Italy's triumph in the women's foil is a testament to the depth of the country's fencing program. Italy has a long history of success in the sport, and the country's fencers are consistently among the best in the world.
