Manny Machado's 24th blast leads Padres past Cubs
Machado homers again as Padres hold off Cubs
San Diego wins second straight, improves to 30-17
Manny Machado hit his 24th homer of the season, a solo shot in the third inning, and the San Diego Padres held on to beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 on Tuesday night.
Machado's homer gave the Padres a 2-0 lead, and they extended it to 4-0 in the fourth on a two-run double by Ha-seong Kim.
The Cubs got on the board in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk by Rafael Ortega, and they cut the deficit to one with a two-run homer by Patrick Wisdom in the sixth.
The Padres got some insurance in the eighth on a two-run homer by Wil Myers, and that proved to be the difference as the Cubs scored one in the ninth on a groundout by David Bote.
Drew Pomeranz (3-4) got the win for the Padres, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. Taylor Rogers got the save, his 14th of the season.
Kyle Hendricks (3-6) took the loss for the Cubs, allowing four runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.
